UP 844 Catches The Flu(e)Part II - New Boiler Arrives HomeBy Chuck Hackett, November, 2001 (you can click on the photos to see a larger versions) (Click here to be notified when this page changes) Right on schedule Ray Pennell of Steam Age USA (Cypress, Texas, 281-516-2713) finished my new boiler and fellow club member Larry Blecha and I hooked up a trailer and drove to Ray's place in Texas to pick up the boiler. Loading the new boiler. Since it weighs 500 pounds Ray took the easy
way out and used his forklift. The third photo shows Ray (left) and I. In
the 4th photo Larry is overseeing the setting of the boiler on the
trailer for the 20 hour trip back from Houston to Omaha. Having arrived at home it's time to unload. I'm not fortunate enough to
own a fork lift but an engine hoist sure came in handy. Below are some close-ups of the new boiler. The three holes in a horizontal line above the fire door will allow cleanout access to the three arch siphons to be installed at a later time. The hole at the top of the smokebox end is the end of the dry pipe from the steam dome which will connect to the throttle valve. The hole in the lower center is for use during washouts. The five larger flues in the top row will be used to install a superheater later this year. Since the superheater will fill these flues I will plug them prior to the superheater installation to see how drafting will perform with these flues occupied. For installation progress see Part III - Installing The New Boiler Click here to return to Part I I can be contacted via eMail.
